Pro Team Finishes 2nd in Columbia!

It was a perfect day with highs in the mid 80's. However, with the "Mighty MO" on the rise, fishing conditions were "testy" at best for the Columbia, Missouri stop of the Bass Pro Shops Big Cat Quest Tournament Trail. It was no surprise however, that a decent portion of the 100+ anglers fishing this stop were able to post some impressive weigh ins. The Bee'Jay ProTeam was again able to show why they are some of the nations top catfish anglers as they were first to weigh in and, maintained 1st place for the majority of the tournament. However, they had to settle for a 2nd place finish as the Kentucky team of Grogan and Hayes had an outstanding 68 pound kicker fish in their live well! Be sure to check back to see how the Bee'Jay ProTeam wraps up this year's Cabela's King Kat Tournament Trail at this years "Classic" to be held at Milford Lake near Junction City, Kansas, September 8th & 9 th !

Top 10 Finish in Waverly, MO!

The Bee'Jay ProTeam was at it again, this time they were working defending their 2 year title as champions of the Waverly, MO stop of the Cabela's King Kat Tournament Trail. They weren't able to hold off all of the 120 anglers that were competing for first place, but they again secured another "Top 10" finish!

Bee'Jay Pro Team Competes in Historic Event!

It was quite a show as 150 of some of the nations best catfish anglers went "head to head" at the first ever "Manufactured Bait Only" Tournament. This historical event was hosted by the Choctaw Casino in Durant, OK, and presented by Bass Pro Shops Big Cat Quest. You can bet that the Bee'Jay ProTeam was making their presence known.   Although they posted their first finish, this year out of the money. The Bee'Jay ProTeam was honored to be part of this exciting event, and looks foreword for such tournaments in the future!

Bringing in the Big Fish in Ft. Madison, IA!

What a show it was as 50 anglers, representing 5 states hit the waters of the "Mighty Mississippi" near Fort Madison, Iowa for the 8th stop of the Cabela's King Kat Trail! The Bee'Jay Pro Team has again made their presence known bringing in the "Big Fish" of the tournament, rounding it out with another "Top 10" finish. They've done it again, with their first appearance in a "King Kat Tournament" this year. This year the "Cabela's King Kat Classic" will be held near Junction City, Kansas, on Milford Lake. As in years past, this is sure to be a premier showcase of the nations best catfish anglers as they go head to head! Be sure to check back in and keep up on all the Bee'Jay Pro Team is up to!

The Bee'Jay Pro Team Finishes First!

The Bee'Jay Pro Team makes their first appearance in 2007, and it is no surprise that they are already making a scene. This time they have decided to divide and conquer. By doing so they secured a 3rd place finish in a U.S. Cats Tournament that launched near Lexington, Missouri, on the Missouri River. As well as a 1st place finish in a Missouri River Outfitters Tournament, that was held at Lake of the Ozarks. You can always expect an "All-Star" performance from these guys! Be sure to check back to keep up on all the Bee'Jay Pro Team is doing!

Q:

I will be fishing in southern California for channels cats, and was wondering what a typical catfish rig consists of ?... rod, reel, line wt., hook style and size, dips? I'm a trout fisherman who wants to fish this summer when the cats are around...tips for the novice catman?

- Jim

  A: Jim,

I prefer to use a medium action, 6' rod with a spinning or bait casting reel (strictly a preference issue). You should use at least 10 lb line and a “Carolina rig”, slip sinker above a barrel swivel with an18"hook leader with a treble hook (a size 8-1/0 is recommended). This set up works great for Bee’Jay’s dough bait, but you may also use a circle hook (1/0-4/0 in size) if you prefer a single shank hook. You will also want to pay close attention to the bottom of the lake, if it is a muddy, you want to float your bait up a few inches from the bottom by using an appropriately sized float. When fishing in cooler temperatures or in low current situations, you should consider using Bee’Jay’s Kat Snot dip bait. This product works to deliver an increased chum cloud when in low flow situations. If you use Kat Snot, you will need a dip lure or a Bee’Jay Bait Saver (which can also be rigged up in conjunction with a dropper hook if state laws allow). If you choose to do this then you can fill the Bait Saver with Kat Snot, and use dough bait on the lower hook (this will allow you to give the fish the one, two punch!). I hope this info helps you catch a big one, and be sure to let us know when you do!

Good Luck!

Q:

I fish a small river that empties into the MS. River in southwest MS. How do you rig for 5 to 50lb. catfish and does your system catch flatheads also. If you use a different rig and bait for flatheads please explain.

Thanks, Ed

  A: Ed,

When we fish small rivers the way we rig depends mainly on the current speed. If the river has moderate to fast current we will throw 3-way rigs. This allows the bait to be off the bottom making it easier for the fish to locate the Bee’Jay bait we are offering. The size of sinker depends on the current, structure, and depth we are trying to present the baits. As far as leaders for the drops, we always us as light of sinker dropper as possible, this allows the sinker to break off if it should become snagged in rocks or brush. If we are fishing slower current we use a barrel swivel and slip sinker to get the Bee’Jay bait on the bottom. One of my personal favorites is to use no sinker at all and let the current take the Bee’Jay to the holes naturally.

We have had some luck catching flatheads on Bee’Jay, but as the largest fresh water predator they are mainly a live bait fish. Rigging with a baitfish from the same body of water as you are fishing is the best offering, but a large goldfish or shiner from the local bait shop will work if you are limited on time to catch bait. Flathead are a fish of structure so the slip rig is the best bet for controlling a lively bait fish. The length of leader is dependent on the size of baitfish used and the density of the cover you are fishing. The shorter the leader the easier it is to control the offering and keep it out of trouble.

Ed I hope this will help you in your fishing adventures this summer. If you have any other questions just let us know.

Thanks,
Wayne
